Now apologies everyone! It’s been over a month ago now that our event taken place ….Wow, what day we all had!! Don’t know about you guys but i’m thinking i’m still recovering!!

But i thought i’d share my thoughts around Sew Up North

As always, i like to have a new me made outfit ready so i decided on to make myself a Tilly and The Buttons Cleo Dungaree at last using the bargain piece of Denim from my trip to Dewsbury back in July and team it with my Frankie Top and of course not forgetting a selection of pins!

Apologies to the people that had issues with eventbrite’s emails/links, not sure why it decided to play silly buggers as it worked perfectly for Last year. But hey ho got there in the end!

We would of had more people attending if it wasn’t for the current round of rail strikes meant that lots of people had to make quite late changes to their plans, which was obviously outside anyone’s control. People were kind enough to let me know about their changed plans in the hope that others could use their tickets, which was lovely of them, but has Becca mentioned that the Eventbrite site is not the easiest to use when it comes to managing wait lists!

For the first time whilst organising this meet up I was actually looking forward to the event, I’m normally a nervous wreck! That was thanks to all the lovely people who’d signed up in advance to help out with the running of things of the day. I cannot thank you guys enough, it made such a massive difference to how smoothly the day ran and for not Becca and I to be a flap all day!

Lorraine (My Friend who is relatively new to sewing and savour of getting myself to Leeds!) and my Myself got to John Lewis by about 9:20, and found Charlotte aka Englishgirlathome which travelled all the way from Birmingham!!! Now that is dedication! Also to find a group of eager sewists already in the cafe! Not sure why i didn’t buy myself a drink whilst I was there thunk i was buzzing from my pumpkin spice latte from starbucks at junction 32!

There was a somewhat awkward moment when Becca and I had to bellow for attention across the John Lewis cafe (which did have some non sewing people in it; apologies to them!) and then the huge crowd of people set off around Leeds.

I made myself a list of what fabric I needed so I only needed fabric to make a snuggly hoody dress and freya dress both from Tilly’s Book Stretch. Which i did buy from B & M as they kindly offered us all 10% off purchases of £15… a girl can’t say no to that!! The Bambi Print is going to be used the Stella and Spot Print for the Freya!

I had to laugh in B&M; there was very rapidly an ever expanding queue of excited people cuddling bolts of fabric wrapped all the way around the shop, with others queuing to get inside. But everyone was in good spirits and led to lots of random conversations and comparisons of planned purchases, which is one of the things I love the best about the event.

Still can’t believe there is a sneaky staircase to the bottom of the shop where Sue and Mike are to offer sewing classes in the future with tea making and toilet facilities of course we had to try it out.

You can’t take simona anywhere ?

After a fairly brief stroll around the market, I headed over to the Boathouse with Lorraine, Gemma and Simona. The time escaped me, failed miserably to be the first there!

Hahaha Becca got a photo of me grabbing fabric but anyone else did…. I don’t take prisoners! Not sure what the lady thought behind me!! ?

It’s a true testament to the benefits of asking for help that I actually got chance for not just a drink but an actual lunch this year; definitely didn’t happen last year! I hope everyone’s lunch was as good as mine! Still can’t believe that we had free pizza too, can’t say no to freebies ?

I actually had time to rummage for fabric and patterns on the swap table; I actually managed to 3 decent sized pieces of black stretch lace, grey striped jersey and this cute cherry print jersey from Beth aka madcouser. I came away with a few patterns that Gemma and Simona found for me to make a 1920 themed dress for my works ball – But i didn’t make it in the end though!!, but thank you ladies for your help.

When it came time to draw the raffle, it all got a bit complicated. We’d been promised a PA system but that didn’t materialise and we also struggled to get the background music turned down. Add to that the fact that we were spread across two floors…. well. Thank goodness for extra volunteers to hand out physical prizes and take email addresses (thanks Heather and Simona) and to incredible sponsors who were willing to be downstairs on the receiving end of a WhatsApp call being shown pictures of winning raffle tickets! Laura, thank you!

49 prizes later and we were done (in more ways than one mind you!) A lot of people had to head off early to face the joy of the rail replacement bus service (myself included) so things did wind up a little earlier than normal, and all that remained was to cash up.

Thank you to our ad hoc helpers dived in and helped Beccaa to count the cash, which, after a couple of last minute donations to get us over the £1k mark, came to an outstanding £1,012!!! Wowsers!!

This really is astonishing! It’s a fabulous amount of money to raise for a truly deserving cause and I cannot thank you all for your generosity enough.

I think the only slight shadow on both Becca and my day was my first experience of someone in the sewing community really taking advantage. 🙁

I won’t name names, but there was someone who, despite having been told (politely and repeatedly) over the preceding weeks that there was a wait list, that you did need a ticket and that we didn’t advertise non-charity events either on our Facebook or on the day, turned up anyway with a big smile on their face and proceeded to push their own business. You know who you are and we were not impressed.

An event like this takes a massive amount of work and effort behind the scenes; Becca and I have poured countless hours over the last 3 years into this willingly, both because we’re firm believers in the charity itself and for the benefit of the local sewing community. I think it takes some big balls to turn up at something like that and brazenly use it entirely to your own advantage and I’m pretty disgusted.

Bu anyways!!

As always, I spoke to so many people on the day and, as usual, i’ve failed miserably to remember names or details because my brain was in total overload! So i do apologise if i have forgotten to mention anyone! Please let me know!

Oh yes not forgetting my fabric twinnie Charlotte aka Englishgirl!

Also a big thank you to Jane who made a apron for Becca and I as a Thank you, it’s very much appreciated as you didn’t have to go to the trouble of making us a gift! I am really grateful as it such a thoughtful gift!

So from the bottom of my heart thank you for everyone’s support either in  the way of of our lovely Sponsors for the Charity Raffle, You kind hearted lot that offered to help out as our Sewcial Squad, to everyone attended too and not forgetting my Sewing Partner in Crme Becca as we couldn’t of made it as such as a success with you!

Hi there!

Where has the time gone? The year seems to be speeding away from me and all of a sudden, it’s almost time for Sew Up North! Only 6 days to go!!! Say what?!!

All attendees should have received an email with final details for the day; please message the Facebook page if you haven’t received yours and were expecting it.

Today we’ve got the final round of sponsor details for you.  The prizes they’ve so generously donated will help us raise money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, a fantastic local cause.  Don’t forget to bring some pennies for raffle tickets on the day!

Fabbadashery

First up today, we have The Fabbadashery, a wonderful little shop based in the centre of Halifax.  Chrissy and the team stock a wide range of fabric and haberdashery and run a wide range of courses; they have donated a make your own bunting kit and a place on one of the workshops.

Fabrics for all

Fabrics For All is a relatively new fabric shop on the outskirts of Leeds city centre. They stock a wide range of fabrics and a selection of independent patterns, and Sarah has kindly donated 2m of gorgeous Lady McElroy cotton lawn to the prize pool.

Denim Company

The Denim Company specialise in (wait for it!) denim, with a great selection of different denim fabrics available through their website.  They have donated 6 x 1m lengths of denim to the prize pool.

Opian

Opian Patterns are a swiss company providing stylish pdf patterns including skirts, swimsuits and even a snood! They have donated 5 patterns of the winners’ choice to the prize pool.

And, last but not least, Simple Sew patterns have given us a bundle of 5 of their paper patterns to add to the prize pool – thank you!

So, that’s it. For a full list of all our sponsors, check out my Sew Up North 2018 page, or simply admire the graphic below!

See you on Saturday!!

Can you believe we are officially into September now and that only means one thing…. Sew up North is this month, only 3 weeks away!!! Say what?!! For you lucky folk that managed to get a ticket, i hope you have seen our previous post of the change of venue at the end. Again, we apologise for any inconvenience that it may cause but unfortunately, it was out of our control but Becca and I generally feel that this is a great venue and even better for you lot that (including me) that will be using the train service as its just a mere 5 mins walk away! Also plenty of parking too nearby so its a winner for everyone!

So, without further a do! We have the following goodies being added to the Charity Raffle prize pool!

Abakhan – Have donated a voucher for an Afternoon Tea for Two to use in their Café at the Mostyn Store. What could be better…. Fabric shopping and cake?! Sounds like bliss to us!!

Sew Dainty– The Lovely Kathy has kindly offered 2 Embroidery Patterns from her shop. They are simple and fun PDF downloads, which contain the cross stitch pattern along with instruction and information sheets. Some quotes are sewing related, some are not.. but all are designed with simplicity in mind, and all use a beautiful brush stroke font. Both Becca and I have tried them out and they are great!

The Avid Seamstress – Lisa had kindly donated A paper pattern from her collection.

Wardrobe by Me – Christine has very nicely donated a gift voucher of $25 to use on her patterns !! Wow!

Wearable Studio – Are a new PDF Pattern company where Sally has been a Pattern tester for and their patterns are quick easy sew with a modern edge to them. Melyssa has donated 1 PDF Pattern of the Winners chossing.

Hi there!

This blog post is a call for help from any of you lovelies who have tickets for Sew Up North and feel kind enough to give us a little bit of a hand on the day.

Becca and I have decided to ask for a little bit of a hand on the day, simply because we were so ridiculously tired after last year and so many people mentioned that they’d have been happy to help. Careful what you wish for!

There’s nothing too onerous that needs doing, but there are a few things that it would make our lives so much easier if we had some helpers for! But please, only volunteer if you really want to help; if you’d rather just chat, shop and buy potentially buy raffle tickets, that’s fine too!

The things we need help with are all at the final venue.  These can be split up as follows;

Raffle ticket folding

Yep, that’s really a job we need some help with! Last time, we sold over 700 raffle tickets. We’d love to repeat that success and to do so, we need 4 lovely helpers to sit and fold tickets, so that we’re all ready to go and draw the raffle, sometime before midnight!

Swap table minders

Last time around, our fabric and pattern swap table was extremely well laden and it all got a little chaotic until a few people very kindly stepped in and kept reorganising things.  This time around, we’d love a couple of people to volunteer to just keep an eye on things, pop things back on that fall on the floor, that kind of thing.

Raffle assistant!

Yes, we’re looking for a glamorous assistant to basically help us manage to enormous volume of prizes we have to hand out and, in particular, take note for the many virtual prizes of the winners’ email addresses so that we can get their prizes sent out to them afterwards

Leftover sweeper-uppers

As anyone who was around at the end of last year’s event may remember,

Becca and I staggered out of there with several enormous bags of unwanted swap table items to deliver to local charity shops.  I think this one was the straw that broke my personal camel’s back; I was just so, so tired! It would be amazing if a few people could commit to staying until the end and then taking charge of a bag of leftovers to take away with them and dispose of at charity shops or in textile recycling bins.

As I said, there is absolutely no requirement for you to volunteer, please don’t feel bad if you can’t or just aren’t in the mood to.  But if a few of you could help us, that would be awesome.

If you are inclined to give us a hand, if you could drop us a DM via the facebook page, that would be amazing.

Thank you!

Sally and Becca xx

Hi everyone!

We’ve got an important update today for those of you with tickets for Sew Up North.

First things first, don’t panic! The event is still very much on, same date and time. However, our final location has had to change.

We apologise for this: it has been completely outside our control. As you’re aware, this is a free event which we organise for fun and for charity. Our venues are provided free of charge and we are very grateful.

So, what’s moving?

After meeting at John Lewis and completing our shopping, we will no longer be heading to Belgrave Music Hall and Canteen. The owner contacted us a little while ago to ask whether they could possibly move us to one of their sister venues as they’d had a request for a (presumably paying!) booking.

After being a little concerned initially, Becca and I went on a little scouting trip to see the alternative venue. And I have to say, we were pretty impressed!

The new location is the Water Lane Boathouse. This venue is somewhat more petite than the Belgrave, but it is really nice. And for those travelling home by train, it’s extremely near the new entrance to Leeds Station, so that’s a bonus!

Located down by the canal, it’s a lovely place with great fresh sourdough pizza, burgers, salad bowls etc on offer for those wanting to buy some lunch 🙂

We will have the entire mezzanine level to ourselves, which does involve some stairs (as did the Belgrave) but we will also have some tables reserved downstairs. The open plan nature of the venue means we think this will work well, and there will be space for us all to gather together for the raffle.

There’s also been mention of some free prosecco and pizza as an apology, so hopefully that will also help, who can say no to free bubbly and pizza?! I can’t!!

If this causes any issues, we really apologise but, as I say, it’s entirely outside our control and we genuinely think the revised venue will still work for a great get together.

For anyone driving, I would recommend trying the Q Park criterion, the Trinity car park or potentially the Wellington Street car park instead of the Merrion Centre or Woodhouse Lane car parks simply for convenience.

Becca and I (and 3 of our kids, my eldest was having a Daddy day so left him at home!) bravely tested the food and found it to more than meet expectations! Rhys checking out the menu in great detail and enjoyed his visit! So we hope you’re all ok with the revised venue.

As ever, if your plans change before the event, do let us know and we can let someone on the waiting list have a spot instead. And otherwise, we look forward to seeing you all!

Afternoon All!

Can you believe we are only 6 weeks away from Sew Up North?!! Time flies when you’re having fun!!

The list just goes on with the number of lovely sponsors that we have for the Charity Raffle in Aid of The Yorkshire Ambulance!

Well it’s for a pretty damn good cause The Yorkshire Air Ambulance. They save lives across Yorkshire, one day it could be yours. They need to raise £12,000 per day to keep both of Yorkshire Air Ambulance’s helicopters maintained and in the air. The donations received go directly into the life saving service provided. However, as an independent Charity they rely on the generosity of those who support the service to continue to save lives across Yorkshire.

And without further a do, we would like to announce more of our lovely sponsors for Charity Raffle:

Crafty Sew and So / My Handmade Wardrobe – Freya and Sarah have kindly donated two PDF patterns from the new My Handmade Wardrobe range of the winner’s choosing! Becca was fortunate enough to attend their launch party of their Patterns earlier on the year and made Cosy Jersey Dress which was just fabulous! Also Sally  has made the Simple Tee this week which is a free pattern btw but she hasn’t got round to posting proper pics yet!

B&M Fabrics – £20 Gift Voucher. Mike and Sue have been supporting our event ever since we had our 1st one 3 years ago and both Becca and I are regular customers! Their fabric range is massive as they have a bricks and mortar shop on the outside of the market and a stall on the inside too! The lucky attendees on the day will also receive 10% off their purchase of £15 or more!! Now there is def no excuse to treat yourselves to some yummy fabrics!!

Simply Sewing Magazine –  Editor Nikki has sent over 3 Bags full of various Sewing goodies!!

If you didn’t know already, It’s a practical magazine for makers who sew, or would like to start sewing.

There is  fantastic range of sewing patterns, from small quirky toys and accessories to larger projects such as bags, home furnishings and simple garments for women and children. Customising your own clothes and home makes, and touches of embroidery and appliqué will also be included, together with fun features and profiles of celebrity stitchers and bloggers. Each issue will also carry a gorgeous free gift!

Sally, last year was featured in Issue 37 of their magazine, showing you how to make your own cute pin cushions!

Flamingo Fabrics – Dorota has very nicely donated a £30 gift voucher to spend at their shop!! Wow! Their fabrics are of great quality and such fab prices too. Sally used their Unicorn Print Cotton to make herself some comfy PJ’s who doesn’t love Unicorns?!

Pink Coat Club – The lovely Joy has kindly donated 2 of her snazzy pins!! Not sure if you have seen Becca and I wearing our Seamstress pins with pride or more recently Sally did treat herself to a necklace with ‘me made’ its beautiful in rose gold and white! Very tempted to get the Navy one tooo…

Hello everyone!

So we’re back again today with yet more sponsors for our charity raffle for Sew Up North.

As I’m sure you know, the event has currently sold out and we do have a waiting list for tickets; you need a ticket if you want to join us at the final venue for the fabric swap and raffle (and more chatting!) thanks to health and safety requirements to please, please do let us know if you have a ticket but your plans change.

Anyway, on to more good stuff!

So, from our next round of amazing sponsors, we have the following goodies being added to the prize pool and your day!

I’m sure you’re all well aware of Love Sewing and its fantastic content for sewists, whether you be a dressmaker or a quilter. Amy and the team have generously donated 4 books to the prize pool, including the fab new book from Wendy Ward (OK, I’m biased, I was on the blog tour where i made the Peak T-shirt Dress but it genuinely is a great book), A Beginner’s Guide To Sewing With Knitted Fabrics. There’s also a copy of each of Complete Guide to Dressmaking, First Time Garment Fitting and Handmade Living.

Fabricate is a lovely little independent shop based in Roberttown, not too far from Ikea if you’re heading that way. You can read all about them in the current issue of Love Sewing. As well as a great range of fabrics, patterns and haberdashery, they run a range of courses and Philippa has donated a place on a workshop of the winner’s choice to the prize pool.

Beyond Measure is a wonderful online shop stocking all kinds of beautiful goodies, be it japanese embroidery needles, leather scissor cases, hand turned wooden pin cushions or other such fabulousness. Grace has once again kindly supported us and has donated a £20 voucher for her online shop to the pool.

Girl Charlee specialise in stretchy fabrics of all kinds. Whether you’re after lovely french terry, ponte roma, spandex or single jersey, they stock a wide range of plains and distinct prints. Mark and the team have donated a £25 gift card to the prize pool and will also be offering a 15% discount to attendees: details will be included in the email that will be sent out to ticket holders prior to the event.

Like Sew Amazing  is a new online fabric and haberdashery store run by Sarah, who stocks a carefully curated range of fabrics, haberdashery and patterns. As a long time blogger and sewist herself, Sarah has an eye for fabrics that you really want to sew with. She has kindly donated a £25 voucher for her site to the pool.

So there you have it! Lots more reasons to save a few pennies for the raffle. Just for info, tickets will be on sale on the day for £1 each, so save a few coins when you’re shopping!

Hello there!

Right, so exciting news; the tickets for Sew Up North will be going live as this blog is published.  As a reminder, Sew Up North is a sewing social event held in Leeds City Centre on September 29th.

The details of our plan for the day can be found in this blog post.

Tickets are going to be available through Eventbrite.  Now, don’t panic; there is no cost involved. We want you to save your pennies for the raffle and help us raise lots of money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

BUT we do need you to register for the event in advance.  This is for very simple health and safety reasons; the final venue let us have the space for free but they have restrictions on the number of people they allow into the space.  Since they don’t charge us to use the facilities, it seems the least we can do is stick to the limits they set.

This year there will be 150 places available.  It’s still a couple of months away, so all we ask is that if your plans change and you’ve registered, just let us know so we can let someone else have your place.

And so, without further ado, let’s get onto the raffle prize sponsors!

First up, a big thank you to all of our incredibly generous sponsors.  You wouldn’t believe how many of these wonderful companies and individuals reached out directly to us to help out, which in my book is just fantastic.  We’d like to say a MASSIVE thank you to all of you, you’re all amazing!

So many sponsors have contacted us that we’re actually going to have to break this down into multiple posts!  Keep an eye out for these over the next few weeks, there are going to be several of them!

However, for today, here are the details on our first few sponsors.

First up is Sew Essential.  Lucy has been one of our sponsors from the first event (thank you!) and is part of the family running the wonderful online store that is Sew Essential.  They are Becca’s first stop whenever she is looking for any haberdashery that’s slightly less standard because they have an amazing range of goodies; they also stock some incredible fabrics and a simply amazing range of patterns. They have a fantastic range of machines available too. Lucy and Angela are always happy to provide lots of advice over the phone or email too. They’ve been kind enough to donate a £25 voucher to the raffle fund; thank you!

Next we have Fabric Magpie. Boz runs this lovely independent website, holding a curated collection of fabrics, and is extremely good at posting very tempting Instagram posts which test my willpower time and again! I was lucky enough to win her fabric competition back in May and made 5 vests out her jersey fabric which is spot on quality! Boz was kind enough to volunteer a £25 voucher for her online shop; thank you!

Next up is  Vicki from Minerva Crafts (again, one of our original sponsors) has sent Becca 4 two metre cuts of Art Gallery Fabrics jersey for the winner of the raffle.  Becca was lucky enough to review one of their jersey fabrics recently (check out the website for a huge range of prints) and this stuff is to die for! Thank you for your support, Vicki!

Now for our first pattern designer prize! Ana is the designer behind Cocowawa Crafts (check out her interview on The Stitchers Brew podcast for the origins of the name!) and is building up a fantastic catalogue of patterns with a distinct, slightly quirky style. Becca’s version  version of her Honeycomb dress and shirt, is fantastic may need to treat myself, which is convenient, since she has donated a hard copy of that pattern to the raffle pool! Thanks Ana!

Finally, for this round of sponsors (we have A LOT more heading your way soon!) we have Sew Me Sunshine.  Harriet’s independent online store stocks a lovely range of fabrics and patterns designed to bring a smile to your face. Harriet’s contribution to the fabulous prize pool is a pattern of your choice from her site and 2m of fabric to make it up in. So basically, provide the thread and your machine and you’re all set! Thanks Harriet!

Right, I think that’s a long enough post for today, don’t you?  Head over to Eventbrite or our Facebook page to get your hands on tickets for Sew Up North and keep an eye out here for details of the (many more) other sponsors of our amazing raffle!
