Hello, my lovelies! It’s that time of year again—time to plan my #MakeNine2025 challenge! If you’re not familiar, #MakeNine is an Instagram challenge where sewists choose nine projects they’d love to make in the coming year. It’s a fun, low-pressure way to set sewing goals, and I’m thrilled to share my picks for 2025.

This year, I’m focusing on a mix of garments and accessories that will elevate my handmade wardrobe. Here’s what I’ll be stitching up:

1. Emily Dress by S.O. Sew Dressmaking

A gorgeous, floaty dress that’s perfect for both casual and dressy occasions. I’m thinking of using a lightweight floral viscose for a dreamy, romantic vibe. I love that this pattern offers different neckline options, including V-neck, square, and round, as well as the option to add ruffles and choose from different sleeve styles. It’ll be so much fun customising it to my personal style! For this version, I’ll be using this beautiful wild roses floral viscose, which will add a lovely, delicate touch.

2. Nina Lee Bakerloo Dress

I’ve been eyeing this pattern for ages! That statement collar and voluminous sleeves are just too good to resist. I’ll be making mine in a striking statement floral print—perfect for layering through the seasons.

3. Closet Core T-Shirt

A classic wardrobe staple! I want to perfect my knit-sewing skills with this pattern, and I’ll be making a few versions in different colours to mix and match with my handmade wardrobe.

4. Noodlehead Haralson Bag

I love a good bag project, and the Haralson Bag is such a stylish yet practical choice. I’ve already got my Tuesday’s Child kit ready, so I can’t wait to see this one come together!

5. Jennifer Lauren Handmade Luna Set

Comfort is key, and this set is perfect for lounging in style. I’m planning a soft, breathable cotton version—ideal for lazy weekends and cosy evenings. For this version, I’ll be using this stunning tiger toile cotton in navy and gold, which will add a bold and luxurious feel to the set.

6. In Complete Stitches Midnight Sun Bag

Another bag? Yes, please! This one has such a unique design, and I’m excited to challenge myself with some new construction techniques.

7. Waves and Wild Wonder Undies

A comfy and stylish pair of underwear that will be both practical and fun to sew. I’ll be choosing soft and breathable fabric for everyday comfort.

8. Tilly and the Buttons Drew Jumper

I love a good cosy jumper, and this one looks like a fantastic layering piece. For this version, I’ll be using this adorable multi-love heart French terry fabric along with offcuts of plain coloured French terry to really make it pop!

9. Tilly and the Buttons Mabel Dress

A versatile woven dress that can be dressed up or down—yes, please! I’ll be using a beautiful cotton or linen for a breezy yet stylish look. This is a tried-and-true pattern for me as you can see in a previous post, and I’m so excited to be making my fourth version of it!

I’m so excited to tackle these makes in 2025! Have you planned your #MakeNine yet? Let me know what you’re sewing this year, and don’t forget to follow along on Instagram for updates on my progress.

Happy sewing!

Love, The Yorkshire Sewist xx

Hello and Happy Halloween to those who celebrate it! I can’t believe it’s the 31st of October already!!

I’m on a roll here! I’ve made one of my projects from my Autumn/winter sewing plans already! Yay! Not sure this will last though 🤔

When I scrolling through insta, I came across Curvy Pattern Database and love how Sarah shares patterns and designers that go to at least 60″ (152cm) hip. Sewing has to be inclusive for all and to take the hard work out of grading up patterns is fantastic 👏 so I’m entering the October challenge!

As soon as this pattern (Waves and Wild Stephanotis) was was released, I soon snapped it up as it isn’t just a dress, it can be a tee or peplum top and you can choose between half circle skirt or full circle skirt which both includes pockets! No dress isn’t complete without pockets in my opinion.

I’m a fan of Stranger Things and when I saw this inspired fabric on Knighton Fabrics Facebook page, it was a no brainer!  So when this fabric arrived, I knew the Stephanotis was the perfect pattern.

The only adjustments I made were to shorten the sleeve by 2″ and the skirt by 3″. Just my usual short ass adjustments lol.

I made a XL with the full bust adjustment then graded to 2xl for waist then 4xl for hips but to be honest I could of got away without grading the hips even with the half circle option.

It sewed up really well and used my twin needle for the hems and neckband.

No garment of mine can get away without having a label in. For this dress, I went for “Today is a good day” by Little Rosy Cheeks. I just adore Victoria’s labels, so inspiring and colourful.

Here is moi modelling said dress whilst out and about at the Trafford Centre, Manchester.

Happy Sewing!

Hello everyone! How are we all? This week it’s half term for my kiddos and it’s been busy from the get go!

I was lucky enough to be chosen to be a part of Twig and Tales group of the newly released Scenic Top.

The Scenic Top

I received the Scenic Top pattern and another pattern of my choice in return for my photos and feedback of the pattern.

It’s a new simple woven top for every-day wear.

With a relaxed fit that is comfortable but not boxy, the Scenic is a versatile multi-season wardrobe-builder. Not just available in adults size but children’s too!

According to my measurements, I made size I for shoulders, graded to size J for bust then Size K for waist then size L for hips. Bust darts were spot on for me. I used the flutter sleeve option and straight hem.

I had this beauty of a cotton lawn from Pigeon wishes that has been in my stash for far too long and glad I used it as it suits this pattern to the ‘T’.

I love the clean finish of the neckline too and so easy to wip up. Think I’ve finally found the woven top pattern for me.

Happy Sewing!

Yes I know we are in March and I’ve just decided on my Makenine 2021 Plans!

I’ve taken part in this challenge back in 2018 but didn’t complete it but I’m hoping to finish it this year. As I’ve previously said in my Sewing Goals for 2021, I did want more loungewear but I am sucker for vintage glam!

So here goes, my Makenine for 2021.

Dress from Dear and Doe Dressed Book

I have been after making this dress for so long and thankfully I will be getting my back side into gear. The lovely Steph from the Rag Shop has kindly gifted me this beautiful Cotton Lawn in return of a blog post for her. It’s going to be one beautiful spring dress.

Rita Blouse by Charm Patterns

Another make that I have been wanting to make for ages. Why is it the Sewing to do list never ending?! However, It’s a great stash buster as it only takes 1m of fabric. Stitch and Bobbins had this beauty of a bubble crepe as a remnant for a mere £6.95!! I have 1.3m by 1.5m so I have plenty for this top.

Lucille Trousers by Charm Patterns

I’m an official Charm Scout! Pic of Charm scout

I just love Gertie’s sewing patterns and I’m afraid to say I haven’t made trousers. So when Gertie released this high waisted, wide leg pants with plenty of fitting tips. Therefore, I just knew I had to give them a go. I Managed to get 4m of Black Heavy Georgette from Pound fabrics for £9.99 including delivery which will be perfect for these.

It’s this month’s Paetron pattern and with me being in the Rose Tier I get a awesome merit badge through the post each month. I would feel like a fraud to receive the Pant Technique badge if I didn’t complete the trousers!

With the look of these… there is some length adjustments to be made!

Gilbert Shirt by Helens Closet

I’ve seen so many beautiful versions all over Instagram and thought I’d get my butt into hear and finally make one! Think I’ll use this fab Tiger print by Fabric Godmother that I bought from Sewmesunhine at the back end of 2020.

Yanta Overalls by Helen Closet

To be honest, Overalls haven’t appealed to me until I saw the short versions of these. Plus the nudge from Laura aka Missmadeitmyself, I thought well why not and give them a go! No fabric in the stash for these but I’m sure I’ll come across some soon.

Vielle Top by Jennifer Lauren Handmade

Big fan of Jennifer’s patterns, I have a mixture of PDF and Printed. Just love the cute bow at the neckline and when I bought this remnant from Like Sew amazing I had the Vielle top in mind.

Josie Bra and Knickers – Made My Wardrobe

I’m a part of Modista Paetron where Sally brings us loads of great sewing advice, zoom calls, competitions and discounts for indie companies. For February there was a Sew a long for the Josie Bra and Knickers. I managed to gather my supplies, pieces the PDF together but that’s all I have got to at the moment. However, I will get round it this year since i have put it in writing!

Kew Dress by Nina Lee Patterns

This Dress is my upcoming Felicity Fabrics Blogger post using the lush Marmalade hearts! I’m sewing up version 1 with the sleeves and me being me, I’ve added pockets to it. You can not have a dress without pockets! I’ll be joining in with the #Sewyellowforendo challenge which is generating awareness about Endometriosis Awareness Month. Here is a little bit more info;

Endometriosis is a cruel condition that affects one in ten women and is the second most common gynaecological condition in the UK. It causes agonising periods, pain with sex, problems with bowel and bladder function and can contribute to infertility. Despite that diagnosis, it takes seven years on average! That is definitely way too long.

Jess is inviting you to learn more about Endometriosis and sew up a yellow or partially yellow garment/outfit – yellow is the awareness colour for Endometriosis. Put your sewing skills to the test and support the Endometriosis community by whipping up a gorgeous yellow garment and show it off on 20th March on Instagram! Simples!

Juno PJS by Tilly and The Buttons

A girl can’t have too many PJ sets right? Again, another one sat on my sewing list. I’ve got the fabulous hand print Tilly Jersey to make with them!

#Makenine Labels!

I haven’t seen Makenine labels before, however when I came across these lovely labels by Emma aka shelovestomake.uk of course these were just the ticket to add to my memades!

Pencil, Buttons, Clips and Memade Garment Labels on White Background

Has anyone else made a makenine list for this year?

Happy Sewing!

Hi everyone. I hope you and the family are keeping well.

Well from my last post I told you I was having a nasty flare up of Fibromyalgia. I’m having a couple of good days instead of all bad ones, still waiting for Pain Management appointment though. But, the few good days had let me get on with a bit of sewing and craft. As sewing does keep me sane!

From my last post Sewing Goals 2021, I mentioned to pace myself and break down sewing tasks into smaller steps. I have achieved this by setting myself an hour a day at most for crafting and checking off my task list.

My husband suggested that I use Trello which is an app that is the easy, free, flexible, and visual way to manage your projects and organise anything.

It is great, I’ve added each project that I want to work on and within that project card a checklist which steps to complete said project. It even has a deadline function to it and reminds you nearer to end date which comes in handy for my sponsored blog posts.

Showing Tilly and The Buttons Stevie top sewing project and checklist of tasks with my kids yapping in the background.

Crafting

I really enjoy using my Cricut Explorer Air 2. I’ve been experimenting with vinyl along with cardstock.

The boys really enjoyed having their belongings personalised. Ethan and I have the same phone case, so this was ideal to tell which one is which.

Black spiegan mobile phone case with personalised white vinyl of hooked on fishing with image of a fish and a hook

Rhys has a favourite mason jar which he uses for juice and has a soft spot for Stitch from Lilo and Stitch. In all fairness, I do too and really enjoyed creating this one. I have put this through the dishwasher and it has survived!

Sewing

In January, we only have one birthday which is my niece Millie who turned 9. After having a chat with my fellow Felicity Fabrics Blogger girls. I decided to make her Made by jacks Mum Explorer T-Shirt. I raided my stash, found this gem that I bought from Like Sew Amazing last year. With all good intentions, the fabric was going to be a Tee for me but never got round to using it. So this was an ideal time to get it used.

Thankfully, Millie and Rhys are nearly the same age, only a couple of months between them. I made her a size 9 going from Rhys’s height. It was whipped up in no time at all when using Mrs Singer aka Singer overlocker 14SH754 and used Mr Singer aka Singer Quantum Stylist 9960 for the twin needle hem.

Here is the finished present along with some handmade tags and card I made with the Cricut too.

Hand’s up, who has the Billie sewing pattern since it was released back in November and only got round to making one till now. That’ll be me! I’m sure I am not alone in hoarding sewing patterns as well as fabric?

It was well worth the wait. I used this now sold out animal print jersey in aqua from Felicity Fabrics also Liz aka thatbakerwhosews used this jersey too. Here is Liz’s Billie with the balloon sleeves, how awesome it is!

Mrs Singer came into play to get this sewn up in speedy time. No garment isn’t complete without a garment label from KATM.

I made a size 5 from the shoulders, grading out to a 7 for the hips. With help from Felicity girls, I got the size just right for my frame.

Coming up in February

I’m a guest blogger for Crafty Sew and So. So here is a sneak peak on what I have been working on.

waistband with label slowly does it

All will be revealed on 7th February 2021. So keep your eyes peeled over at Crafty Sew and So

I’m hoping to have a Buddy Sew a long with Laura aka Missmadeitmyself via Zoom to make the Nina Lee Picadilly PJs using this fabulous fabric from xxstitchedupxx . I have 2.5m and its extra wide too, so I have plenty to make whichever version I decide to make. Now, what buttons do I go for?

I did toy with the idea to make a dress out of it but thought I will get more wear out of them as PJs!

There you go folks, a round up of my January makes. What have you been sewing this year so far?

Happy Sewing

The post Sewing Goals for 2021 appeared first on The Yorkshire Sewist.

]]>
Hi All, hope you’re all well.

Unfortunately I’m not, Fibromyalgia has flared up big time. I’m in a lot of pain, not sleeping and generally feeling really naff at the moment. I’ve been given new medication and a referral to pain management clinic. Fingers crossed I’ll be back to my normalish self soon.

After watching Tamlyn’s video about her sewing goals, last week. I thought that’s a really good idea to try and set myself no set specific garments like #makenine. I have kicked myself in the past for not getting them completed and this year will be different!

So here goes, my hopeful sewing plans for 2021.

Words Slow and Steady with decorative triangles on pink background

Slow and Steady

As you know I do have chronic health conditions, I work part time and trying to home school the kids too at the moment is a challenge. In future sewing projects from now on, I’m taking a leaf out of Samantha’s book. I will break tasks down or set myself an amount of time to be sewing. Not to rush, enjoy the process, hoping I’d make less silly mistakes this way and save myself some energy.

Words Practical Sewing with decorative triangles on pink background

Sew Practical Clothing

I don’t about you lot but I’m no way inclined to make pretty dresses at the moment as I can see this year being in the majority of lockdown. Yes I know, It isn’t the right way to look at it but why make something that you won’t get much wear out of. I am wanting to make myself more loungewear, for example jogging bottoms, comfy tops etc. I’m thinking of finally getting round to make the Stella joggers from Tilly and the Buttons Stretch book and making quite a few Billies’ too.

Words Fabric Stash with decorative triangles on pink background

Use the Stash

Yeah… I have a stash and half! You know what it is like when there is a sale on and think I must have that fabric but never have a project in mind at the time. It needs to change and only buy fabric with a specific project in mind. I’ll be going through parts of my stash and plan some makes. I know of the top of my head that I have 2.5m Tilly and the Buttons hand print jersey and 2.5m lemon print jersey which are destined for the Juno Pjs. I just need to print out the pattern or trace it, which ever will be quickest way to get it together I think.

Words Sewing Community with decorative triangles on pink background

Sewing Community

On Instagram alone, there is a huge sewing community with plenty of challenges and swaps to take part in. I really want to take part more and get to know more like minded people in the world.

Pink and white background with pigeon Image displaying Pink and Red Party hosted by Pigeon Wishes on 12th February 2021

I’m taking part in Megs aka pigeonwishes Galentine’s Day party which is to make something in either pink or red. I also posted about making this back in November’s post, at least I’ll get there eventually!

After looking in my stash I’ve got the beautiful add it up in pink by Ruby Star Society which will be a tried and tested Stevie top by Tilly and the Buttons. Who doesn’t love a cute bow and an easy sew. Yas!

Finally, be kind to myself

I really need to be kinder to myself and practice self care more.

Pace myself, try not to do everything all at once.

Rest more!!!!

Eat better and drink more water.

Don’t beat myself up if I don’t get my sewing tasks complete, when it can wait for another day.

Does anyone else have any sewing goals for the year?

Happy Sewing

I’m trying my hardest to put some plans in place for Autumn/Winter wardrobe and definitely found a few gaps!

I don’t have many Cardigans, I’ve recently made Pattern Scout Lulu Cardi which is fab to wear with dresses but it’s more a Spring/Summer accessories and then i have my Wendy Ward Kinder Cardi that i use for work. So i am in need of a snuggly cardi for everyday wear.

So after having a lovely little chat with Aimee of Sew Anonymous I’ve bought this beaut Pink Melange Jersey it will be perfect for the Ellie and Mac Chapman Cardigan or Cardigan Love, but still can’t decide which one but I have both patterns in my stash!

Then I bought this luscious Candy Pink Dalmatian print viscose when Sew Anonymous first opened as it was an absolute steal at £5 a metre and with it being 142cm wide too you can definitely get a dress out of 2.5m. So I’ll be making either Tilly and The Buttons Stevie Dress with the Add on Pack or Lotta.

Also not forgetting my bargain from Samantha Claridge Studio of Ruby Star Society Add it up which will be a Long Sleeved Stevie Top. Unfortunately, that colourway is out of stock but she has many more bargains left to be had, so please check out her Sale section.

Then finally getting some winter coloured pinafores in my memade wardobe! I’ll be using this Fabulous Taupe Corduroy from Sew Anonymous to make a Bobbi Pinafore for my 1st Fabric Addict Post for Aimee at Sew Anonymous.

Then Finally for my upcoming Blogger make for Felcity Fabrics an memade combo that will be perfect for the chilly weather!

A Freya from Tilly’s Book Stretch using this delicious Rose Pink splashed dots.

Then a Tilly and The Buttons Cleo to go with the Boudeaux Corduroy.

Phew! Have you noticed that I’m going towards colours i wouldn’t normally go for? Thinking I’m living dangerously for a change!

So what have you got planned for your memamde wardrobe?

A big Thank you to Felicity Fabrics and Sew Anonymous for providing me with these beautiful fabrics for an exchange of a blog post of what I make with the fabrics provided.

Happy Sewing!

Now if you haven’t heard about Wow Fabrics before where have you been?!! It’s a fabulous family run company that can print any type of print you’d like into 13 different fabric options!! But here is a little bit of info about them:

The fabric company with the ‘WOW’ factor. Based in the heart of the UK, and with an international reach, and using our in house state of the art digital printers a process known as ‘sublimation’, we’re able to offer high quality bespoke printed fabric for all of your fashion needs.

Wow Fabrics has over 50 years combined experience in creating bespoke printed fabrics and textiles, producing items for worldwide licensed brands such as Star Wars, Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story, Pokemon and World of Warcrafts., in addition to working with small and startup businesses.

With competitive prices, extremely fast turnaround times, no minimum order quantity and extensive knowledge around placement printing and products, and a strict quality control in place, we’ll help to give your creations the ‘Wow’ factor.

Also there is many different fabric options to use so at long last no print is just set for one type of fabric!!! Yay!

Now I couldn’t resist this beautiful watercolour floral print as it is just stunning, I ordered mine on the spun polyester base it’s a thin jersey.

Fabulous timing too as Nina Lee Patterns were looking for Sewists to pattern test 3 of her patterns  Southbank Sweater, the Carnaby Dress and the Mayfair Dress in the new size range extends from UK 16–28 and the PDFs for this range will be entirely separate products ; the overlap of 3 sizes with the original range (6–20) is to hopefully help any customers who need to grade across sizes. I was luckily enough to be picked for the Mayfair!

With this fabric being a wide width i was able to get the dress cut out with some scraps that i can hope to turn into some knickers at some point.

Is anyone else like me and want to use their sewing accessories at any opportunity? Love using my Pattern ruler for cutting out straight lines with my rotary cutter than using my frixion pen for marking.

So on I went with sewing the Mayfair together! With my Sewing Assistant wanting to get in the way!

Now when it came to Step 5 of sewing the collar facing just imagine once big burrito!, that’s where i had a total brain fart moment it took me a few attempts at getting this right but once i figured it out it did came clear but Nina will be adding a video tutorial to her website and link to it in the instructions.

Would you believe that the belt was 3 pieces and its super long… don’t get me wrong i love a belt but when out have to turn it the right way out, that’s where it gets time consuming! So instead of sewing one end, i left both ends open and slip stitched the ends shut for ease of turning.

Think you all know me by know that i need to shorten the sleeves on any garment i make so i hemmed by sleeve by 4cm rather than 1cm and with the Dress itself i used a double hem by 4cm in total rather 3cm and then used my twin needle to hem both.

I find threading my twin needle tails to the underside of my garment then knotting them quite therapeutic for some reason.

And here is my Mayfair! Made in Size 16 for Bust and graded to 18 for waist and 20 for hips. Its a nice classy dress which is definitely coming with me when we go away to Amsterdam Minicruise!

Happy Sewing!

Hi All

I’m finally getting round to showing you guys my more than just a Halloween Dress, i was inspired by Vicky @sewstainability and Elle @sewpositivity to try and be more environmentally friendly with my makes so instead of just creating a dress that i would wear once for Halloween, i could wear year round!

I found this fabric on Ebay and it was a mere £7.98 for 2 metres with free postage! But once it arrived, I was a little stumped on what dress to make at first but after discussions with Lisa @sewlastminutelisa, finally decided on using Pauline Alice Patterns Aldaia Dress there is a whooping 27 different options to make it yours!

I decided on the View B Bodice with View A Elbow Length Sleeves and View C 6 Gore Skirt. According to the Sizing Guide i was a 46, only alteration i made was to the sleeves as i usually do with my short arms.

The instructions were quite clear on how to sew the dress but I did have to refer to other parts of the instructions as I have combined 3 different parts of each version of the dress but I got there in the end.

For some reason I couldn’t get my darts on the bodice to match with the seams on the skirt hence why I used a quite apt ‘imperfect’ side seam label by Kylie and The Machine. You wouldn’t know as the pattern is quite busy but I know and you know what I ain’t going to let it bother me as at the end of the day, I’ve sewn it and I like it so monkeys to anyone else!

I really do like finishing my hems with a twin needle it gives really good looking results. My Mr Singer (Quantum Stylist 9960) actually behaves quite well for this task.

So here is my finished Dress and you know it’s such a good fit to say I’ve not used Pauline Alice Patterns before and especially not having to shorten the Skirt either! Win win in my book!

So here i am out in the Garden to get a bit of natural light while it lasts! This Dress highlights my good bits so i’ll be definitely making more 🙂

Thank you to the Biggest lad for being my Photographer.

So if you haven’t tried Pauline Alice Patterns yet i would highly recommend them for fitting straight out of the packet.

Happy Sewing!
